Performance

The 2022 S-Class makes three engines available across its trim lineup. Starting as the base engine is a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 mild hybrid engine that produces 429 horsepower and 348 pound-feet of torque. Moving to the S 580 trim level ensures more power thanks to a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 mild hybrid that makes 496 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. If you're interested in even more power with the supremely luxurious S-Class, then there's the 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged V12 engine. This engine makes 612 horsepower and 665 pound-feet of torque. All three engines come standard with all-wheel drive and pair with a 9-speed automatic transmission.

Technology

The S-Class covers all the modern driving essentials and then some, and that's especially true in the technology realm. The base S 500 trim level comes equipped with more tech than most other upper trim levels of other luxury brands offer with their top trim level. The S 500 trim comes equipped with a 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment display, USB-C ports, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, wireless charging, a navigation system with augmented reality, and a 15-speaker Burmester surround-sound system. The S 580 version of the S-Class builds upon the impressive set of standard tech offered by the S 500. The S 580 includes a 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment display, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, voice control with natural language understanding, MB navigation, an HD radio, and a rear seat entertainment package (with the Executive Line version). It's worth nothing that the S-Class is available in several different sub trims that vary by main trim level. The S 500 is available in a Luxury Line version along with an AMG Line version. The S 580 trim level makes three sub trims available: Luxury Line, AMG Line, and Executive Line.

Interior

The S 500 Luxury Line includes heated 12-way power front seats, active multi-contour front seats with massage, ventilated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a panorama roof, illuminated entry system, and soft close doors. The AMG Line version of the S 500 includes a similar set of interior features as the Luxury version, except it includes a variety of AMG features, including AMG floor mats and sporty detailing to the cabin. Moving to the S 580 finds even more interior luxury and comfort features for drivers to enjoy. The S 580 Luxury Line comes with rapid heating front seats, massaging front seats, cabin-air ionizer/fragrance, 64-color active ambient lighting, and surround-view cameras. The S 580 AMG Line comes with unique AMG badging, AMG floor mats, and sporty detailing in the cabin. The S 580 Executive Line trim adds in a rear seat package, an Executive rear seat package, a rear seat entertainment package, and a warmth/comfort package.

Safety

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class includes a well-rounded set of safety features that ranges from classic safety equipment to cutting-edge driver assistance features. Classic safety equipment includes things like seat belts and airbags while driver assistance features vary by trim. The S 500 trim comes with a more than substantial array of driver assistance features. The S 500 includes active lane keeping assist, active parking assist, rear cross traffic alert with pedestrian detection/automatic braking, active distance assist, active steering assist, evasive steering assist, active brake assist with cross-traffic function, active emergency stop assist, active speed limit assist, active blind spot assist, active lane change assist, extended restart in stop/go traffic, and attention assist. Yes, that all come standard with the Mercedes-Benz S-Class S 500. Driver assistance features remain more or less the same with the upper S 580 trim.

Trim Overview

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class offers up two main trim levels and either two or three sub-trim levels per main trim. The main S 500 trim level is available in a Luxury Line trim and an AMG Line trim. Stepping to the S 580 trim adds in an Executive Line trim along with the Luxury Line and AMG Line. The S 500 Luxury Line trim lives up to its name by offering up extensive luxury features. The S 500 Luxury Line includes heated front seats, massaging front seats, ventilated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, remote start, a panorama roof, soft-close doors, and easy-adjust front head restraints. The S 500 AMG Line trim adds in a variety of AMG features, like AMG body styling, AMG wheels, AMG floor mats, and sporty interior AMG styling. The S 580 main trim differentiates itself from the S 500 by replacing the base 3.0-liter turbocharged engine with a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged engine that makes 496 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. The S 580 features the same set of features with its Luxury Trim and AMG Trim as the S 500 version. The S 580 Executive Line is unique to the S 580 trim, offering up a host of nifty comfort and convenience increases. The Executive Line includes a warmth & comfort package, a rear seat package, an executive rear seat package, a rear seat entertainment package, and 10-degree rear axle steering.
